On July 24, 2023 Eugene R. Young Jr. announced his candidacy for United States Congress, running as a democrats for the state of Delaware. He was appointed to serve as Delaware’s Director of the Delaware State Housing Authority, by Governor John Carney in May of 2021. In cooperation with other state agencies and advocates, Director Young drives DSHA’s mission to provide and assist others to provide, quality, affordable housing opportunities and appropriate supportive services to low- and moderate income Delawareans.
Prior to his appointment, Director Young served as the President and CEO of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League and co-founded Network Delaware, a grassroots, member-led organization of community members, leaders, organizers, and activists joining together to bring real, sustainable change to Delaware.
Director Young began his career 20 years ago, co-founding Delaware Elite, a youth leadership development program that provided inner-city youth with academic enrichment, leadership training, and college access. He has experience working in the non-profit sector, as well as for the city, state, and federal government, serving as an aide within the Delaware General Assembly, and then as a close aide to New Jersey Mayor and current United States Senator Cory Booker.
Director Young was born and raised on the Eastside of Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from the University of Maryland Baltimore County with a dual major in Information Systems and Sociology. He received a Master’s in Public Administration from Wilmington University and Studied Nonprofit Management at the University of Delaware.
